New Delhi: Sony Pictures Films India has teamed up with Kamal Haasan for an untitled Tamil film which will star Sivakarthikeyan. The project will be led by Rajkumar Periasamy.

Certainly, Bollywood’s top major studios have been looking to the lucrative regional film market for film production and distribution for a few years now. After beginning its local film production in India in 2018 with Akshay Kumar’s star Padman, Sony had announced its foray into the regional space with a Malayalam project co-produced by and starring Malayali superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran. After the spectacular success of the Tamil-Telugu war epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which it distributed in northern India in 2017, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions continued its foray into regional cinema by distributing the first Marathi Bucket List by Madhuri Dixit. Viacom18 Motion Pictures has also followed up its hit Marathi thriller Aapla Manus with a light-hearted post-independence Marathi storytelling cycle and a Punjabi film Nanak Shah Fakir, in addition to the Tamil romantic comedy Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal.

Last September, Sony announced a slate of 17 films, including Hindi, regional language and Hollywood titles, that it planned to hit theaters over the next year. These included a comedy titled Tera Kya Hoga Lovely, starring Ileana D’Cruz and Randeep Hooda, an underwater thriller Dive directed by Nitin Parmar, Saale Aashiq, an honor killings film to be directed by debutants Siddharth -Garima who wrote films like Bajirao Mastani, Nikamma with Abhimanyu, Shirley Setia and Shilpa Shetty, family artist Aankh Micholi and Major, a film based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was martyred in the attacks of 26/ 11.

The studio has also released Hollywood films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom 2 – Let There Be Carnage in theaters over the past few months.
