New tax on single-use plastic packaging


In accordance with the law, the fee applies as of today to single-use or multi-material plastic packaging containing plastic, and also applies from 1 January 2023 to aluminum or multi-material packaging containing aluminum.

This particularly concerns packaging for take-out meals and home deliveries.

The measure aims to encourage the introduction of reusable packaging systems in restaurants and to encourage the reduction of single-use packaging.

“The offer of ready meals or home delivery is showing a clear growth trend, with the direct consequence of an increase in the consumption of single-use packaging, which makes it all the more urgent to put in place measures to decouple this growth. consumption of resources and production of waste,” says the ordinance that regulates the change that comes into effect today.

The document recalls that establishments that provide ready-to-eat and take-out meals are already obliged to accept that their customers can use their own containers, so there is an alternative to paying the contribution. .

The product of the royalty will be directed half to the State and 40% to the Fund for the environment, can we also read in the ordinance.

Last November, the government already banned the marketing of other single-use plastic products, such as straws or cotton swabs, cutlery and plates, balloon sticks and cups, partially transposing a European directive .

In the rule that comes into force today, there are some exceptions, one of them for packages containing ready meals that are not packaged in the establishment of sale to the final consumer, “since the establishment does not control the packaging of the product in these cases, so it does not allow the consumer to have an alternative”.
