CHICAGO–(COMMERCIAL THREAD) – JohnsByrne, a leader in premium packaging and personalized printing, recently won the prestigious “Package of the Year” award at Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) Ceremony 78e Annual North American Cardboard Packaging Competition. This is the third time that JohnsByrne has won the industry’s highest honor in the past seven years. The first prize of the “Package of the Year” was one of four awards presented this year by JohnsByrne.

The company’s winning package, the Kiehl’s Advent Calendar for 2020, took home two awards in the competition – not only the top prize for “Package of the Year” but also the Gold Award for Sustainability. In addition, JohnsByrne also won a Gold Award for Achievement in Packaging for the Case Makes Swatch Kit and an Excellence in Packaging Award for the Rabbit Hole Rigid Box. The packaging designs recognized in the PPC competition represent some of the best folding cartons and rigid boxes of the year.

“Not surprisingly, Kiehl has a cult following hit from dedicated customers to their products,” said Corey Gustafson, president of Johnsbyrne. “The Advent Calendar is a special celebration with featured artists, products and designs. You can actually see the love customers have for the calendar in the unboxing videos and related social media posts that many people have posted themselves! ”

This is JohnsByrne’s 7th Advent Calendar for Kiehl’s. The challenge: to create a calendar that not only provides an extraordinary holiday experience for consumers, but which for the first time is made from 100% recyclable materials to embody Kiehl’s commitment to sustainable packaging and its ‘L’ theme. future looks better ”. The result: a luxurious and intricate Advent calendar made entirely of sustainable materials and without the plastics traditionally used in such packaging … the greenest holiday campaign ever.

The design – depicting a whimsical visit to a Kiehl’s store – includes 24 Kiehl’s products in individual, straight-closing cartons, designed for a snug, puzzle-like fit inside the outer hinged box. So not only does the closure box double as a shelf display, the individual boxes also provide a premium unboxing experience … and the entire calendar can be reused.

“The schedule includes everything Kiehl’s demands of us in this annual centerpiece and more, including durability, stunning graphics and an unmatched customer unboxing experience,” added Corey Gustafson. “Annual production has tripled since our first schedule for Kiehl’s seven years ago and has included incredible improvements every year. It’s the type of challenge that our structural engineers excel at, and we are delighted to have received the Package of the Year award. ”

No wonder this collector’s item sells out early each year and customers keep their Advent calendars long after the holidays have ended.

“The 2021 competition was fierce, showcasing not only the expertise and virtuosity of the PPC members, but also the enduring nature and limitless creative possibilities of cardboard,” according to the 2021 jury judges. ‘Avent Kiehl’s designed by JohnsByrne, the judges noted the emphasis on durability: “They replaced the indoor vacuum deck from previous years with these beautiful boxes and graphics to tell the story of the countdown to. Christmas. ”
